Security Guard Training In The UK: What You Need

The most common mistake new security staff make is paying for the cheapest course they can find, then realising a month later it does not cover the job they want. Ten minutes of planning saves a few hundred pounds.

Pick the licence first

• Security Guarding — static sites, offices, retail, construction.
• Door Supervision — pubs, clubs and events, and it also covers guarding.
• CCTV — control room and camera work only.

For most people, door supervision is the better buy. The course is slightly longer, but the licence opens far more work.

What the training includes

Expect modules on the law, your responsibilities, conflict management, emergency procedures and terror awareness, plus a first aid certificate. Door supervision adds physical intervention. Assessments are a mix of multiple choice exams and practical tasks.

Beyond the minimum

Once you are working, the most useful extra training tends to be a better first aid qualification, fire marshal training and, if you want to progress, a supervisor or management course. Employers notice people who invest in themselves.
