Retail Security Jobs: What Nobody Tells You

Retail security has changed. Shoplifting is more organised, abuse towards staff is more common, and most shops now tell officers not to chase anyone. If you expect to spend your day making arrests, you will be disappointed. If you want to learn how to read people, it is an excellent school.

What the job is

• Being visible at the entrance, which deters far more theft than any intervention.
• Supporting staff who are dealing with difficult or aggressive customers.
• Working with store detectives, CCTV and police on repeat offenders.
• Writing clear incident reports that can be used later.

Know the law and your company policy

Any person can detain someone in limited circumstances, but the legal risk sits with you if you get it wrong. Most retailers have strict policies on when, if ever, you can physically intervene. Learn them properly and follow them — no store will thank you for an injury or a lawsuit over a few bottles of spirits.

Doing it well

Good retail officers are friendly, noticed and hard to provoke. They greet people, remember faces and keep notes. That calm, observant approach transfers directly to corporate, residential and protection work later on.
