Security Supervisor Jobs: Your First Leadership Role

The supervisor role is the first real test of whether you can lead. You are still on site, still in uniform, but now you are responsible for other people's shifts, standards and mistakes — often people who were your colleagues a week earlier.

How people get promoted

Supervisors are usually chosen from officers who are reliable, write good reports and stay calm. Ask for extra responsibility before a vacancy opens — covering a supervisor's leave or training new starters is the best interview you can have.

Leading former colleagues

Be fair, be consistent and do not try to be everyone's friend. Explain decisions briefly and do the unpleasant jobs yourself sometimes. Respect comes from seeing you work, not from the title.
