Security Guard Jobs In The UK: A Straight Guide

Security guard work is one of the easiest ways into employment in the UK and one of the easiest to get stuck in. The difference usually comes down to where you apply, which contracts you accept and whether you treat the first year as a stepping stone.

What you need before applying

• An SIA Security Guarding or Door Supervision licence — door supervision covers guarding too and gives you more options.
• Five years of checkable history, often called BS 7858 screening. Gaps need explaining, so keep old payslips and references.
• Proof of right to work and a current address history.

Where the jobs are

Big contract companies hire constantly for retail, offices, construction and logistics sites. They are a fine place to start, but rates are tight. In-house roles, where a hospital, university or corporate employs you directly, usually pay better, come with proper holiday and pension, and see far less staff turnover.

Spotting a poor role

Be wary of adverts that promise huge weekly earnings, ask you to pay for uniform or training upfront, or pay you as self-employed for what is clearly a full-time employed job. Ask who the client is, how shifts are allocated, and when you will be paid. A decent employer answers easily.

Moving up

After a year, look at supervisor posts, control room work, or specialist sites like airports and data centres. If you come from a military or policing background, you can often skip ahead — so build a profile that shows it rather than applying as if you were starting from zero.
