• Static and retail guarding: hourly, usually the lowest band, with modest uplifts for nights and weekends.
• Door supervision: hourly, above guarding, with real premiums for late finishes and demanding venues.
• Corporate and front-of-house: salaried or a better hourly rate, with structured rosters, holiday and progression.
• Control room and CCTV: comparable to corporate, higher where qualifications and evidence handling are required.
• Close protection and private client: quoted as a day rate, extremely variable, frequently project-based rather than continuous.
• Overseas and maritime contracts: rotation-based, often higher gross but with travel, insurance and tax complications to account for.

What actually raises your rate

Not time served. Rates rise when you reduce a client's risk or workload: a current medical qualification, an advanced driving licence, a second language, control room certification, supervisory experience or the ability to write a report a lawyer could read without wincing. Each one narrows the pool of people who can do the job.

Read the whole package, not the headline

Before you compare offers, check who employs you, how travel and standby are paid, whether accommodation and insurance are covered, what the cancellation terms are, and whether the rate is gross or net of your own costs. A slightly lower day rate with proper cover is often worth more than a headline figure with everything deducted from it.
